Well hello, Mary Kay

I was lucky enough to be invited to a Mary Kay 'consult' by one of my best friends from high school this past Sunday. Sophia won a raffle, which put her in touch with Sara Pennella, a Sales Director and Beauty Consultant for Mary Kay. Sara arrived at Sophia's house ready to teach Sophia, Gabi, Caroline and I about skin care, makeup application, and much more.

Sara began by asking us if we had heard of Mary Kay, we all answered yes, but then Sara addressed the fact that we all kind of thought of Mary Kay as a 'grandma' brand. Oops. Boy did she prove us wrong.

Not only did we love every single product we tried, we walked away with some valuable information on taking care of your skin. The three most interesting and important things that I took away from my afternoon with Sara were:

1. DON'T use a 'cocktail' of products (guilty). When companies create a line of products, the products are not typically designed to work with other companies products (duh, they want you to buy their whole line, not just one product). So, when you mix and match your brands for cleaners, scrubs, moisturizers, toners, etc, you're actually making it harder on your skin.

2. Your lips are the only place on your body that don't self-exfoliate. Whaaaat? So, while the top layer of skin on your lips may already be dead, your lips won't shed on their own. A lip scrub is recommended to solve this issue. Don't use it everyday though- your lips will be raw! My favorites are Mary Kay's 'Satin Lips,' and Sara Happ's 'Sparkling Pink Grapefruit Lip Scrub.'

3. When you put on your foundation in the morning, do you just rub it any which way you please (again, guilty)? Stop! Sara informed us that it actually does matter how you apply cream foundations. She told us that your skin cells are layered just like shingles on a roof, so if you rub your foundation in by pulling your hands/fingers/brush out or up, your makeup won't look as good as if you were to only put it on by pulling/brushing downwards. Sara drew the roof analogy, and I made my own- it's like petting a cat, you can only pet in one direction!

Hope these few tips helped you, too! If you're interested in getting in touch with Sara, please let me know!

Keep wandering,
